Adam Hellman, Turnberry Bank’s Vice President and Pinecrest Branch Manager, was recently a special guest speaker at Palmetto Middle School where he lectured students about the banking industry.
Hellman initially provided students an overview of Turnberry Bank as a full service federal savings bank with branches located in Aventura, South Miami, Pinecrest and Coral Gables. He then explained the role of banking as both a lending institution and as a depository where customers save money for a variety of financial needs. “Banks offer loan programs primarily to finance homes, small businesses, automobiles, boats and commercial real estate,” he said. “To qualify, borrowers must demonstrate the capacity to pay the loan back, as well as have sufficient collateral should the loan default.”
As a depository, banks typically help customers save money through checking and certificates of deposit accounts to pay bills, put money away for college tuition, pay for weddings and an assortment of other financial necessities. Customers also receive a variety of services such as online banking, 24-hour ATMs, safe deposit boxes and VISA check cards. Hellman emphasized with the students the importance of saving in order to manage their money and keep some for that rainy day.
As a future career, he explained the variety of positions available in banking. “As an office manager, I am only one person on a banking team comprised of tellers, platform account executives and loan officers,” he said. “People planning careers in banking should be capable of developing effective working relationships with others, have academic backgrounds in finance and/or accounting, and demonstrate strong communication skills.” Added Hellman: “Careers in banking can be very exciting and offer excellent opportunities to develop professional and personal relationships with our clientele. We also become well versed in an assorted variety of interesting businesses.”
